FAQ
Outbound Singapore
What to do if a family member or friend has recently died in Singapore and you plan to transport their body back to the Country of Origin?
You would need to take the following steps:
- Getting a Death Certificate
- Decide between cremation in Singapore and transporting the ashes to the Country of Origin or Repatriating the body
- Select a trusted and reliable Singapore Funeral Company in Singapore with Repatriation experience to coordinate the repatriation and the paperwork.
Inbound Singapore
What must you do when a loved one passes away abroad?
Upon receiving word of a Singaporean death abroad, the Embassy will work with the appropriate Singapore Authorities to confirm the deceased’s identification and NOK’s contact information.
After receiving the news, NOK is obligated to take the following steps:
- Determine whether the dead had obtained travel insurance that specifically addresses death and repatriation of remains. If this is the case, NOK must promptly inform their insurance provider.
- Choose a representative to go overseas to identify the body and take care of the appropriate arrangements (such as retrieving the deceased person’s belongings and communicating with the local funeral director).
- Decide between cremation in the local Country and transporting the ashes to Singapore or Repatriating the body.
- Select a Singapore Funeral Company in Singapore with Repatriation experience to coordinate the repatriation.
Note: NOK should request a police report if the cause of death cannot be attributed to natural causes.
Repatriation of body back to Singapore
The following documents are required for repatriation of the body to Singapore and must be prepared to accompany the casket to enable clearance upon arrival in Singapore:
- Death Certificate (Original Death Certificate should accompany the casket)
- Original Passport
- Embalming Certificate
- Sealing Certificate
- Casket Export Permit
- Airway Bill
Note:
- It is crucial to know that the Cremation Chamber in Singapore can only handle coffins up to the maximum proportions of length 210cm (7 ft), breadth 60cm (2 ft), and height 56cm (22 in) (1ft 10 inches).
- If any of the following documents are not written in English, a certified English translation must be produced. This is especially important for death and embalming certificates. Legally, translations done by private companies are fine.
All the above documents are to be sent to the designated undertaker in Singapore, along with a Letter of Authorization; they will help you apply for an import permit from the National Environment Agency (NEA).
Repatriation of ashes back to Singapore
The following documents are required for repatriation of the ashes to Singapore
- Death Certificate
- Cremation Certificate
Note: Put the ashes in a sealed container and include a copy of the death certificate and the cremation certificate. Bringing ashes into Singapore does not necessitate a special permit. It is NOK’s responsibility to find out whether the airline permits passengers to bring ashes on board in carry-on bags.
